  3. Can I ask you a question? How do I know God will answer my prayers? I've been praying for a job for several months now (I'm a stay-at-home mom, trying to get back to work now, but no one wants to 40 something mom). Will God answer all prayers? If he does, why can't God help me find a job? Thank you.

Q: How do I know God will answer my prayers?

We don't even know if God hears our prayers, much less if He will give us what we ask for. Because sin can hinder our prayers. Just like if you have a friend who's upset with you because you've done something stupid to deeply offend them -- do you think they're going to return your calls? Do you think they're going to reply to your emails? What they want from you is an apology, and if you are unwilling to apologize, they're not going to talk to you or even listen to you. It's the same with God -- if we're sinning against Him, and we refuse to repent, do we think He'll listen to our prayers asking for this and that? We should repent of our sins; we should be on our knees asking for forgiveness.

Also, when we pray, we must always be open to God's better plans, knowing that God always takes care of His children. Just like when Jesus prayed: He is God's perfect sinless son, but even He prayed "Not my will, but yours be done." For us, we should think, "Am I most concerned about praying for my blessings, or about God's glory?" Because Jesus tells us to pray first for His kingdom and His righteousness, and all the rest of the things we need will be provided to us.

For us, when we look back on our own life, we're often very glad that God did not give us what we asked Him, because we now see that it would not have been good for us. We won't always know why He doesn't give us some things that we've asked for, but at least we know that whatever He gives us is what we need the most at that moment. Sometimes, though, we're so set on whatever it is we're asking for, that we don't see things clearly and get mad when He doesn't do what we want Him to do. Kind of like a two-year-old who really, really wants to stick his fork in the power outlet.

If you're interested, check out Jesus' prayers in the garden of Gethsemane (Luke 22:39-46), Jesus' teaching about how God takes care of His children (Matthew 6:25-34), Peter's advice to husbands about how they should treat their wives (1 Peter 3:7 -- note what he must do so that his prayers will not be hindered), and John's teaching about how we can be assured that God will give us whatever we ask for (1 John 3:21-23).

There's a lot more that could be said about this, but that's plenty for now.
